Zero-Year Cards, Part 18

2002 Topps 206 #138 Coco Crisp (Cardinals)

The day after.

My longing to open my first packs of 2012 has been taken care of. Finally!

Now back to some baseball cards that were issued before 2012.

And on to Coco Crisp. The man with one of the best nicknames in recent history was drafted by the Cardinals in the seventh round of the 1999 draft.

It's hard to believe that the player that led the American League in stolen bases last year was once a "player to be named later". Crisp was indeed the PTBNL in an August 2002 trade between the Cardinals and Indians that sent pitcher Chuck Finley to St. Louis in return for Crisp and another minor leaguer.

Crisp's earlier cards still list him by his given name, Covelli. I like "Coco" much better.

He'll be back in Oakland for the 2012 season, surprisingly. I'm not sure why any free agent would choose to go to Oakland right now, but, hey, it's his decision.

And thus the Cardinals have their first inductee into the "zero-year" club.
