After the afternoon session there was the awards ceremony and I managed to take home first place in the 15mm category for my Israeli troops and Zelda APC.
For the Saturday night session I played in Jerry Acord's "Steal the Bei-Khun" Star Wars scenario. Jerry has some rather clever Force power rules for StarGrunt that work quite well.
The board is from the Halo game that didn't sell too well. I'm told you can pick them up fairly cheaply on Ebay. There's also two packing crate skyscrapers that Jerry has dressed up nicely.
My side had Jango Fett, a Sith, and a variety of scum who were trying to set a trap to capture ambassador Bei-Khun. Through some bad planning, tactics, and bad luck we were pummeled pretty well. At a certain point we conceded seeing that we only had three units left and no Sith to guard them. The other side still had a Jedi and Padawan and plenty of forces. I figured the game would last only 3 more turns with us loosing a unit a turn. Better to just call it off and walk around and see what everyone else is up to.
The following morning I ran my "Wild Geese at the Airport" scenario. It's a representation of the climactic battle from the end of the movie "The Wild Geese" Here you see the abandoned native Kraal, the aging Dakota and airstrip. RSM Sandy Young and two squads enter from the bottom left through the Kraal. Sean Finn and a Vickers defend the Dakota. Alan Faulkner, Rafer Jaunders and a squad carrying Limbani on a stretcher enter from the top left.
Col. Mboya's troops start with two squads in the Kraal. RSM Sandy Young splits his troops and one of the Mercenary squads is eliminated. Folks, don't split your forces in the face of the enemy.
Here's where I brag about my Dakota...
In the end Sandy Young is pinned down unable to take any weight off of the group carrying Limbani. They manage to detach Sgt Jesse and two squaddies and get Limbani on the plane. But that's it, no one else survives. The plane has to leave with no one else on board. I give a minor victory to Col. Mboya's troops. Again, no one seemed happy with the outcome. I should have been more explicit in the victory conditions, but only getting Limbani on the plane and really no one else is not enough for a victory. The Mercenary forces didn't play very well together and never seemed to have a plan or the initiative.
Next year though I think I'm only going to run one game. I had more fun playing than running and I don't think people had as much fun in my games as last year. I'm looking at running something akin to Stuart's 2' x 2' District 9 game. The theme for mine will be Fallout 3 though. Welcome to the Capital Wasteland!
Tomorrow I head out for Cold Wars. Jon Yuengling and I are running two 15mm I Ain't Been Shot Mum Lebanon 1982 games in Vistas C which is just off the hotel lobby before the entrance to the restaurant. Doc Merkury is also running a 28mm Lebanon '82 game in the same location. Hope to see you there.
